Dunedin Hospital is seeking applicants for the position of ED Senior Registrar starting February 2021.

Dunedin City in the South Island of New Zealand is a fantastic place to live. The city nestles into hills surrounding a picturesque harbour. Dunedin is known as the ‘Wildlife Capital of New Zealand’ and is famous for its beaches, penguins and sea lions. New Zealand’s oldest university and medical school are both located in Dunedin. Twenty five thousand students add to the flavour of Dunedin city.

The surrounding South Island is one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Coastal Dunedin has some of the best surfing and fishing in New Zealand. The Southern Alps provide opportunities for all manner of outdoor pursuits, with first class hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing, rock climbing and mountaineering opportunities all within easy reach of Dunedin.

Dunedin Hospital is a tertiary level hospital of 400 beds and is located in the city centre. The Emergency Department sees 45 000 patients per year. Patient mix is broad and a full range of trauma, medical, surgical, paediatric and minor presentations are seen on a regular basis. Senior support is excellent, with one of the highest Consultant to Registrar ratios in the country. Most importantly, the ED staff room is home to a Rocket espresso machine! The Dunedin ED Senior Registrar position is possibly the best ED Registrar position in New Zealand. Three twelve month positions are available. Senior Registrar one and Senior Registrar two alternate weeks in ED and Anaesthetics. These positions count for six months each of ACEM advanced training time. The ED component of the Senior Registrar one and two positions consists of four shifts per week; two where the Senior Registrar supervises the shift (supported by an ED Consultant) and two where the Senior Registrar is the second senior on shift. There are no nights and no on-call obligations. The Anaesthetics component consists of five days per week of anaesthetics in a supernumerary capacity, which provides a degree of freedom to choose airway focused lists. The third Senior Registrar position is entirely ED based. This position is largely the same as the ED component of the Senior Registrar one and two positions and provides ample opportunity for developing ED special interests. Special interest opportunities in Dunedin include: simulation, toxicology and research. Dunedin ED is accredited for rural/regional training and is a great place to meet the mandatory six months of rural training time. Senior Registrar one and two positions are ideal for ACEM advanced trainees who need airway time. The third Senior Registrar position is better suited to an advanced trainee who has already met the ACEM airway job requirements. All Senior Registrar positions are highly conducive to Fellowship exam preparation. Dunedin Hospital has an active Fellowship exam preparation process and an ACEM examiner, and previous Fellowship candidates have had an excellent first attempt pass rate.
